Chapter Twenty-Two

The pulsating heartbeat of the jungle engulfed him as Dante carried his cherished bundle towards the trees. She had said that she wanted him to make love to her. Well, that was just what he wanted to do--oblige her impassioned request. Why not? There were different rules to live by here in the jungle. Why should he turn away and play the noble fool? She had set his pulse pounding with her soft invitation and delicately roaming fingers. The truth was he couldn't resist, couldn't turn away from her now. His need to possess her was much too strong.

"Are you sweeping me off into the bushes?" Amanda's voice was breathless, her words slurred.

"Yes." He paused, waiting for her to change her mind, still troubled by her state of inebriation. For that matter he was less than sober himself. "What do you have to say about that, Doctor."

"Good." She wound her arms tightly around him, bringing her soft warmth against the hardness of his chest with the intensity of a searing brand. "I've wanted you to make love to me for a long, long time, Captain." She sighed. "Why haven't you?"

Dante knew why. Because the feelings he had for her were threatening. But he couldn't confide that to her. "I had my reasons," he breathed, reminding himself of them now. He knew he should take her back to the fires, should let her go.

He might have had he not stumbled. In reaching out to save her from a fall he pulled her tight against his body. She looked up at him and the wanting that sparkled in her large hazel eyes, those soft, pink lips parted so invitingly, made him shun all sensibility.

"Amanda...!" His mouth closed on hers like a bolt of lightning, jolting them both. The kiss went far beyond a mere touching of lips. His tongue searched the contours of her mouth with an exploring caress that intensified her passion.

Amanda's head whirled in a dizzying awareness of him. The length of his hard muscular body felt hot against her own. His kiss took her breath away. His tongue touching hers tasted of wine, intoxicating her anew. Returning his kisses with unrestrained abandon, she felt desire spread languidly through her body, a warm, tingling feeling.

How long he kissed her, she did not know. She had lost all awareness of time. Her world was in his arms, his nearness her only reality. Her senses clamored for him. His kisses. How she loved his kisses.

"Thank you, Kwame," Dante whispered aloud as he made his way towards the hut that had been offered to him. Ducking through the opening, he slowly lowered her to the ground. Taking off his shirt he fashioned a makeshift bed on the soft straw mat and lay down beside her. His fingers slid down the front of her chemise, fondling her soft yet firm breasts, teasing their peaks into tautness.

Dante was mesmerized by her, by how right it felt to be with her this way. "You have such beautiful skin.
